Why you shouldn’t use essential oils on newborns

Is there anything better than the intoxicating smell of your newborn, or anyone’s newborn for the matter?!

Did you know that, the smell of your baby and the smell of you to your baby actually has a science behind it?
Scientists have learned that in new mothers, the body odour of newborns activates the centres of the brain that perceive rewards and pleasure releasing oxytocin known as the ‘love hormone’.

Studies in animals have shown that all mammals, from mice to primates, use their sense of smell to establish and develop a mother-infant bond. If mothers and babies can’t smell each other, they might not become as strongly attached.

A baby can find her mother simply by smelling her. Babies can focus their eyes only about eight to 10 inches, but they can smell from a much further distance. Because of this incredibly important part of bonding for a mother and baby, essential oils
should not be used on or around babies who are younger than 3 months. The smell of essential oils could disturb the natural smell for both mother and baby.

In the case of premature babies, people should avoid using essential oils until at least 3 months after their due date.

For this reason, we at meadows decided to create a natural massage oil with just that in mind. Our massage oil is essential oil free and perfect to use on newborn skin.
